Heavy metals remain as persistent pollutants that are harmful to the environment and can easily bioaccumulate. The occurrence of heavy metals in wastewater has become a critical environmental issue. Conventional physicochemical processes result in additional sludge, are costly, and cannot handle metals at low concentrations. A novel and environmentally friendly approach to heavy metal removal from wastewater integrates biosensing and bioremediation, offering a two-pronged solution. The main objective of this research was to examine how integrating biosensing techniques with bioremediation can improve the effectiveness of wastewater treatment systems in controlling heavy metal pollution. Bioremediation techniques involving microalgae, bacteria, and fungi help to remove or transform toxic metals through enzymatic reactions, bioaccumulation, and biosorption. The methodology combines microbial remediation processes and biosensor tests, which form a feedback loop to enhance the effectiveness of bioremediation. Some important findings of the study indicate that, compared to other processes, the simultaneous application of these two technologies decreases costs while increasing accuracy. This dual strategy has important implications for the development of sustainable wastewater management. This strategy can help achieve regulatory compliance, promote the circular use of resources, and the global move towards the development of “intelligent” and “green” water treatment systems.
